(AP) — Los Angeles Angels two-way rookie Shohei Ohtani will have Tommy John surgery next week.The Angels confirmed Ohtani’s long-expected decision on elbow ligament replacement Tuesday. When asked whether Ohtani is likely to be ready for opening day as a hitter, Scioscia said there are “too many variables” to make a confident prediction.Ohtani wasn’t available to reporters before the game, but Scioscia confirmed general manager Billy Eppler’s earlier statements that the Angels are committed to Ohtani’s determination to be a two-way player in the majors.“It obviously puts him out of pitching in 2019, but he’ll be able to hit, and I think he’s at peace with that,” Scioscia said. “He wants to excel at both phases of the game. With just 347 plate appearances, he is leading all AL rookies in on-base percentage (.361), slugging percentage (.564) and OPS (.925), while his 21 homers are fourth among AL rookies.He is the first player in major league history to hit at least 15 homers and strike out at least 50 batters in a single season, and he joined Babe Ruth as the only players ever to hit 15 homers and pitch 50 innings. Pedroia is still the big presence in this lineup, though this could be his last appearance. The second baseman played his nine scheduled innings and the Red Sox will decide on Monday whether or not to activate him for Tuesday’s home opener. Elsewhere, Howlett had his first nice game of the year and Casas reached base twice as well as contributing the game winning sac fly.Player of the Day: No surprises here. Darwinzon Hernandez is the easy pick here with his five shutout innings and ten strikeouts. We all assume he will be in the major-league bullpen at some point this year, and Alex Cora hinted at that being likely in spring training. Still, he’s in the rotation for now and there’s still an outside chance he’s going to be able to stick there. He showed the control issues in this game and that’s what is likely to hold him back, but if he can take a step forward he goes fro ma really interesting and fun prospect to a stud.
